Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence
A multinational, multi-stakeholder project, the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) aims to direct the responsible development and application of AI with a focus on human rights, inclusion, diversity, creativity, and economic prosperity. India joined the multi-stakeholder initiative on June 15, 2020, making it a founding member of GPAI. India has now made a substantial contribution to the GPAI’s aims and objectives. It has been engaged in a number of domestic projects aimed at responsible AI development, application, and acceptance.
India submitted a nomination to become the next council chair of GPAI, positioning itself as one of the biggest economies in the Global South and a leader in the AI race. After garnering over two-thirds of the first preference votes, India was chosen to take over as the Council Chair in November 2022. India will serve as the Incoming Chair in 2023, then subsequently Lead Chair in 2024, and Outgoing Chair in 2025.
